Phasemation EA-220 Phono Amplifier

About The EA-220 Phono Amplifier

This single-chassis solid state phonostage features discrete component construction and Phasemation's 'no negative feedback' circuit topology. In key parts of the analogue stages very high quality components are used such as ELNA’s SILMIC II audio grade electrolytic capacitors and 1 % tolerance metal film resistors. And the power supply benefits from a low-leakage R-Core transformer and soft-recovery rectifier diodes.

Tech Insight

The EA-220 employs the essence of the no-feedback principles that Phasemation have trickled-down from their flagship designs. Zero feedback is a well known approach that trades traditional feedback linearity of simpler, less expensive circuit designs, with improved speed and reduced timing errors that zero feedback allows. But in order to keep inherent noise and linearity at audiophile levels, circuit design, and particularly component quality and tolerances, have to be to the highest specifications possible. So whilst the EA-220 is the least expensive phono stage from Phasemation, it still contains the required circuit and component quality to deliver that zero feedback sound.

Matching & Setup

As a single-box solution, the EA-220 is a simple upgrade replacement for a more moderate single box device or as the first step to a good stand-alone phono amplifier. It should be used on it's own shelf on a good hifi rack. Configured for both MM and MC cartridges, the EA-220 is a superb choice for those progressing with turntable upgrades at a similar price point. Mid-level turntables from brands such as Pro-ject or Rega, with an upgrade plan to higher MM or mid level MC cartridges, can combine with the purchase of the EA-220 as a logical and sophisticated path to significant vinyl performance.
