About the SN/SL 270AMT
This is where the Fischer&Fischer range really starts to get serious. Whilst still offering a small footprint, the larger volume and double in-house 160mm mid-bass drivers, combined with that glorious AMT, are pushing the response into real full-range teritory. The slate cabinet adds the other big dimension too, and the combination of grip, drive, transparency and imaging are breathtaking.
Bass reflex loading on this model is factory configurable too. Normally downward firing, it can aslo be specefied as forward or rear firing.
Tech Insight
The obvious visual and sonic change on offer here is the use of the Air Motion Transformer (AMT) rather than the soft dome tweeter. The AMT is rather similar in benefits as a ribbon tweeter, although the principle of operation is rather different. In a ribbon the driver is a flat foil whereas an AMT uses a pleated driver that is driven rather like a concertina to move the air forward and backward. The folded driver design, combined with the small motion range, means the AMT acts like a point source version of a larger driver, inherently resulting in lower sound reproduction distortion.
Matching & Setup
The step up from the 70s/170s to the 270s is quite significant. Firstly, because of their capabilities, they deserve a much higher quality of source and amplification components. The AMT tweeter offers very high resolution that shows off the finest detail from a really good system, and the combination of the larger bass drivers and much more massive cabinet reveals a good system's lower frequency capabilities to spectacular effect.
And they are capable of driving larger rooms on the end of more power. Indeed, we would say that for most UK living rooms, the 270AMT is very much at a performance sweetspot.
